Moe Stein is the second of three generations of Steins running Frank’s Sport Shop in Bronx, New York. Moe possesses a throwback style – a sharp wit and ready one-liners that he flings at any and all customers. In this day and age of big chain stores, Frank’s is nearing its 80th anniversary. Stein must be doing something right.

QUESTIONS:

1. This one may be a challenge. Describe Moe Stein using the Big Five Personality Dimensions. Arguably, Mr. Stein has been a business success. How do you explain this in terms of the dimensions? Does he possess a dimension that should be inconsistent with success?

2. Does Moe Stein experience job satisfaction? What do you believe contributes to this?

3. Does Moe Stein have emotional intelligence? What would Moe’s son say? Analyze Stein in terms of the four EI competencies. Does the fact that Frank’s Sport Shop is located in the Bronx matter?

4. Discounting son Ronald’s comment, does Mr. Stein experience job stress? If so, what kind?

One Response to “M: How to Catch Moe Fish”

  1. DEMICHAEL JACKSON

After reading the excerpt the following are my five points about Moe Stein.

Medium to High level Extroversion – Moe isn’t a timid person. In fact he doesn’t hold back. “People come in and say, ‘You’re still here, I thought you were dead!’ I say, ‘I am, but you’re standing here with me. What are you?’ ” (Dolnick, S. 2010). In my opinion, if someone answers in that specific fashion it depicts the person has unlimited amount of confidence. Extroverts don’t like to keep feelings within them they like to speak out and let the people know what’s cooking in their heads.
Low Agreeableness – “working — and usually arguing — with him.” (Dolnick, S. 2010). Moe Stein isn’t a person who’s welcoming; he’s cold and disagreeable. When someone argues it means hard to manage personality and hard to get along with. In my opinion, low agreeableness also shades light on how difficult a personality one has; easy to get along with or not.
High Conscientiousness – “Moe began working there when he was in high school.” (Dolnick, S. 2010). Moe isn’t only dependent and persistent but also a reliable person firmed at high levels of conscientiousness. When someone has gone through so many stages with the company (both progressive and depressive stages) and still clinging with the company shows the trust and persistency one has for the company.
Medium Emotional Stability – Moe is not calm and yet not depressed, he’s situated somewhere in the middle. “People come in and say, ‘You’re still here, I thought you were dead!’ I say, ‘I am, but you’re standing here with me. What are you?’ (Dolnick S, 2010). If Moe had a low level of emotional stability he would’ve not responded back and would’ve jus taken the claim as it was and if he was calm if would’ve just taken it as it is and not responded back.
Low Openness – Moe Stein doesn’t encompass any of the traits the define Openness to Experience in the text (Robbins T, 2014). He doesn’t have any desire for sensitivity, curiosity or imagination. Nowhere in the passage does it state that Moe Stein is curious about peoples’ needs, all he does is simply answer any queries that the customers present him with.
